Minutes from the previous meeting were reviewed and approved with one
correction.
In paragraph 4, Animal Plant should read Animal Planet. Motion made by Danny
Thompson to accept, seconded by Virginia Townsend. Tom Shores gave the
treasurer’s report. Extra expenses on there were fireworks and a loan to the
fishing tournament. Motion made to accept by Vince Jordan, seconded by Sue
Heath. Steve Marshall also passed out year-to-date budget prepared by Jay Tawes,
who was unable to attend.
Valerie Mason gave an office summary. Delmarva Quarterly is looking for 6
business/chamber members to do a full-page ad in the magazine. We already have
two, need four more. The chamber is moving their storage building from 5th St.
to Scott Tawes storage building, next to Harborside Lighthouse Restaurant, on
the highway. The old storage building is deteriorating; roof leaking and animals
are getting in and tearing things up.
Charlotte Scott, a long time chamber member, was our speaker. She spoke about
the Business Navigation Forum. Their second anniversary is this month and they
have 126 members. Charlotte gave handouts to the chamber members and also
introduced 5 of her forum members. They are planning a fundraiser at UMES on
August 12th.
Motion was made to donate $100.00 for the fundraiser, which would buy 10
tickets. David Price motioned, Danny Thompson seconded, no opposed.
Terry Pehan, By-Laws chairman, handed out the revised copy of the by-laws, to
the Board of Directors, along with the present copy of the by-laws, for
comparison. Also, the membership committee submitted a proposed dues/fee
structure. Board members not present will have one mailed to them. Each board
member is asked to read them, and then make suggestions on changes. Once that is
done, the by-laws will go out to the general membership. Terry stated that he
hope to have everything done by the end of the 2006 year.
Dennis Smith, Somers Cove Marina, stated that the marina is getting ready for
the Crab & Clam Bake and the Crab Derby. 4th July was very busy, had a lot of
boaters and maintenance was busy getting the grounds ready for the fireworks. He
also said that the new slips in the marina should be ready by spring ’07 and
after that they will request a new floating pier. Dennis stated that he
appreciated Dan Kuebler and the chambers help with the marina.
Mayor Purnell was in attendance and stated that the city is moving forward. He
also talked with Secretary Franks of DNR and is working with them on the marina.
Right now there are no other plans for the museum. City Hall severed ties with
Crisfield Associates. However, Mr. Corrado will still be doing business in
Crisfield. Mayor Purnell also met with Secretary Scott. She stated that they
will still be supporting Crisfield and will not take away “Priority Places”.
Danny Thompson, Somerset County EDC, commended Charlotte Scott for her work with
the Business Navigation Forum. He stated that the group is doing great things in
the area. Danny also encourage the chamber to look into the revolving loan,
there is money out there for the community. Also, he stated that Somerset County
EDC is working on 4 larger projects and is meeting with the City of Crisfield
and Somerset County.
New Business:
Steve Marshall stated that he received a letter from Charles Pinkerman, CEO
of McCready Foundation. They are asking for a $75,000.00 donation over the next
three (3) years. Danny suggested giving this to the finance committee. Steve
will get a copy of the letter to Jay Tawes, chairman of the finance committee.
Old Business:
- Terry Pehan asked about the loan
made to the Princess Anne Chamber of Commerce for the full-page ad in the
paper regarding the “Wal-Mart Bill”.
- The status of the showmobile? Has
anyone looked at it regarding repairs? It was at the fishing
tournament and is in bad shape.
- David Mason and George Tawes should
be commended for their work on the fishing tournament. It went very well.
Motion made to adjourn by Tom Shores, seconded by Dennis Smith. Meeting
adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Valerie Mason
